Antique African Hand-Carved Wooden Sling Shot On Custom Lucite Base
Antique hand-carved slingshots are popular throughout West Africa, historically made by Lobi, Dan, and Baule carvers. Found in both the male and female form, their meanings vary. Generally, the female form has long been associated with fertility and are considerably more rare and hard to find. The male form is traditionally carved by a father and given to his son to bring luck through the power that flows through the slingshot.
Arguably more crudely rendered than others, this slingshot brings a sense of impressionism in contrast with the more realistic interpretations of the other slingshots in the Casa Berbere collection. It feels modern and brutal - even phallic, especially when viewed from the back. The exceptional shape sits adrift a fine Lucite base for display on shelves, tables or pedestals.
This slingshot measures 8.5" high, 2.25" wide with a depth of 3.5" - making it an elegant conversation piece and a unique objet d'art for a considered home.
