In Northern Thailand, borders are shared with Myanmar and Laos. The indigenous highland peoples can be traced back to the last significant ice age, some 15,000-18,000 years ago. Cultural linguists have found evidence to support linking modern traditions and legends back 8,000 years. In short, while select modern innovations like the cell phone are undoubtedly present, very little has changed in the way of culture.
If you are looking for a fantastic work of sculptural art that straddles the modern and primitive hemispheres of artistic expression, you could do a lot worse, likely not much better. While we won't divulge the artist's name, not the location of his studio/workshop/Garden of Eden, he and as many generations as he can count have called the highlands home.
